Measure Ten Times, Cut Once.
Corsets are notoriously hard to make. In fact, when constructing
the first few corsets, I think I pulled many hairs out of my
own head! There are all sorts of angles, pieces and parts that
go into them. The future corset owner must be measured in about
10 places or more in some cases.
Decisions, Decisions.
In short, this is a messy obsession. My living room is an explosion of sewing paraphernalia. My favorite part is actually picking out the fabric and trims. There are so many fabric stores - most of the time I'm so picky that I'll go to many stores in a day.
For custom projects, I will sometimes have the customer come with me to the store so that the exact texture desired is achieved. There are actually many layers to a properly constructed corset. My average is four to five layers.
Corset Terrorism.
Some of the tools involved look sort of frightening as well. As such, I can not get any work done while traveling via plane.
Many would also be surprised at the boning as well. While plastic is well and good for the average corselet, only steel will do when constructing a functional corset. Because of this, most of the hardware inside of the corset can be hard to find, causing me to rush to the internet to buy my supplies.
